Internships & Co-ops

BPMI Internships

The BPMI Intern Program is a competitive, paid summer internship that offers an opportunity to increase exposure between BPMI and potential full-time candidates, while providing a chance for mutual evaluations. Many interns go on to become full-time employees, and the Intern Program gives them a better understanding of BPMI and the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, which has strengthened their knowledge prior to full-time employment. US citizenship is required.

Internship Benefits

Close Mentoring
New hires are assigned a sponsor during their internship at BPMI, who will assist them in their day-to-day efforts and provide them with a more in-depth perspective of BPMI and their assignments. This sponsor, along with their manager, will provide guidance and training on the specifics of BPMI’s business and operation.

Training
Interns are provided with various training opportunities throughout the summer, depending on their chosen field of study. These opportunities may include engineering, nuclear propulsion support operations, project management, technical writing, budgeting, negotiating, and contract management.

Shipyard Tour & Supplier Visits
During mid-summer, BPMI’s intern coordinators take our interns to Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia for a one-day shipyard tour. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to see aircraft carriers, submarines, machine shops, and other areas of interest. The tour allows our interns to gain a better appreciation of what the work at BPMI supports and how extensive the Navy program really is.

In addition to the shipyard tour, BPMI interns visit various other partners including BPMI’s sister company, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory, as well as multiple suppliers. These visits help our interns better understand our role in the NNPP.

BPMI Co-op Program

BPMI also offers a co-op program to a small group of selected engineering and business students. Benefits of the co-op program are similar to those of our Intern Program, although the overall structure is more robust because of its length. BPMI co-op participants generally begin work at BPMI in the fall of their junior year, and continue alternating each semester between working onsite and taking college classes. Co-op participation typically adds one semester to their college program, but prepares them for full-time employment upon graduation. US citizenship is required.

BPMI provides students real-world experience that goes beyond the classroom.
