Professional Learning & Development

We recognize that providing learning and development options and opportunities help employees to build a successful career, achieve job satisfaction, increase productivity, and ultimately improve business results.

BPMI offers structured training and development programs to ensure that employees have a consistent experience, background knowledge, and the appropriate skills to successfully perform their job and fulfill their career aspirations. Whether employees advance their career as a subject matter expert or in management, they will have various programs and resources to support their journey.

Each new employee joining the BPMI team is assigned a sponsor, even before their first day of work. Together with their manager, a new employee’s sponsor helps to make their first days and weeks at BPMI a positive experience, whether that means knowing who to turn to for work-related questions or simply having someone to eat lunch with.

Onboarding is designed to be completed during your first thirty days. Onboarding consists of a mix of learning activities and on-the-job training to provide you with an understanding of our company and an orientation to your new role at BPMI. This program highlights how safety, security, and quality impact the job you do to support our “One Team, One Mission” approach to our work.

BPMI’s Technical Training programs provide our employees with the skills needed to support our operations.  Our courses are taught by our experienced and professional subject matter experts who welcome the opportunity to share their knowledge and skills.  Some examples of these training programs include:
•    Engineering Signature Authority Program
•    Basic Engineering Program
•    Procurement Foundations
•    Shipyard Rotation Program (optional)

Tuition reimbursement is available after satisfactory course completion for approved courses and degree programs that are typically related to your current or future work discipline.

Other opportunities for external training are available for conferences, workshops, and seminars that will improve an employee's ability to do their work, such as computer, technical, or leadership training.  The Institute for Management Studies (IMS) is a popular resource for external training among our workforce. IMS offers training and webinars on cutting-edge management topics.

BPMI offers the tools that promote opportunity, program structure, counseling, and resources to assist employees with their personal career development. Career success can be measured in many ways, and it’s important for employees to be aware of the various career and development options that are available to them at BPMI, as well as select the option that best satisfies their personal and career goals.

In addition to BPMI’s custom training curriculum, employees also have access to Udemy, a leading online training platform that contains more than 11,000 courses spanning the latest skills and topics. Employees are encouraged to develop skills that will aid in their role at BPMI and are permitted to take those types of courses during their workday. As an added benefit, employees can also access Udemy off-hours to take training courses that satisfy their personal interests.

BPMI is fortunate to have a large number of employees who have of decades of experience in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, industry, management, and military. The invaluable experiences, knowledge, insights, and guidance of these professionals enable BPMI to offer an active optional mentoring program that helps mentees:
•    elevate their career goals
•    learn new skills and knowledge
•    improve performance
•    challenge their thinking/mindset
•    discuss valuable feedback
•    and more!

All employees, whether new or experienced, are required to take annual training courses that support safety, security, ethics, anti-harassment and discrimination, and other topics as designated by BPMI. All employees must complete training refreshers on these topics to ensure that they maintain the required skills and knowledge to successfully perform their job and cultivate a safe, secure, inclusive, and ethical work environment.

Call it a lofty goal, but we wish for all employees to enjoy a lifelong career at BPMI. This is why we offer professional development and internal movement opportunities that can support employees throughout every stage of their career, even if it's in a direction away from their original expertise.

More Ways to Lead or Grow

Leadership Development Programs

We believe in developing strong, human-centered leaders. Our next generation of managers gain the skills needed to lead effectively through both internal and external training opportunities.

Ship Experiences

Shipyard tours are an exciting and unique opportunity to connect our daily work to the mission of the U.S. Navy. Other experiences allow our engineers, procurement professionals, and technical writers to see their products, components, or parts in action.

Cross-Training

Performing job duties outside an employee’s normal responsibilities grows skill diversity that can enable career advancement. Cross-training can be a short-term or ad hoc fix, or can be an ongoing, planned process.

Special Projects & Assignments

On-the-job assignments, projects, and stretch assignments enable employees to learn while doing real work. Developmental assignments allow employees to develop new skills, knowledge, and competencies necessary for higher-level positions.

Become a New Employee Sponsor

It’s often said the best way to reinforce your knowledge is to teach others. Sponsoring a new employee means contributing to a positive onboarding experience and showcasing all that our workplace culture has to offer.

Join or Lead Committees

Joining a committee lets employees connect with colleagues who have similar passions and interests. Taking a committee leadership role is a great way to develop the skills needed to be an effective leader.

Internal Certifications

Become a process improvement expert by working to become a Green Belt, or reinforce your ability to lead projects and manage business priorities with a project management certification.

Management Fundamentals

We recognize that it's critical for new managers to have the right support to be successful in their leadership role. This program includes formal internal and external training, coaching, and mentoring.
