Interns & Co-Ops

Make your mark with a full-time, paid internship that supports our national security.

BPMI offers full-time, paid internships at our Monroeville, Pa., headquarters (near Pittsburgh) as well as our Schenectady, NY, office. Internships at BPMI most frequently occur during the summer months.

An internship with BPMI gives you the opportunity to work in your field of study while simultaneously pursuing your degree. Internships enhance your academic training while providing an understanding of BPMI and the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP). Many interns return for multiple rotations and may be offered a full-time position upon graduation; an internship is an effective way for you to determine whether BPMI is a good fit for you, and vice versa!

Full-time employees who began their career with BPMI as an intern or co-op will tell you the work they performed as an intern closely matches their full-time responsibilities. Likewise, you can expect a meaningful internship assignment, gaining hands-on experience and knowledge you can carry with you throughout your career. Like our full-time workforce, every intern and co-op must obtain a Federal security clearance before their first day of work.

What You Can Expect from Us

Close Mentoring
You’ll be assigned a sponsor who, along with your manager, will provide guidance and training on the specifics of BPMI’s business and operation and how your assignments relate to the big picture.

Training
Our interns complete a thorough new employee orientation curriculum including the basics that will instill confidence to help you perform your job well, like company processes and procedures, to broader topics like our company history and the heritage of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.

Shipyard Tour
One of the most exciting opportunities as an intern is a visit to Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia for a one-day shipyard tour. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to see aircraft carriers, submarines, servicing facilities, and other areas of interest. The tour allows you to gain a better appreciation of what BPMI’s work supports and how extensive the Navy really is.

Frequently Asked Questions

The process for obtaining the Federal security clearance required to work at BPMI can take several months. So that our interns can begin working at the beginning of summer, BPMI interviews for and extends internship offers in the fall prior to the summer an internship is expected to take place. We regularly attend the fall career fairs of several colleges and universities, and we normally fill our openings by December for the following summer.

While most college students who work at BPMI do so as an intern, we also hire co-ops, primarily for engineering (with mechanical engineering co-ops being the most common) and procurement roles. The expectations and benefits of a co-op closely align with those of an intern, so most of what you read about BPMI interns applies to the co-op experience as well.

The primary difference is that co-ops generally commit to BPMI for two to three rotations; participants have the flexibility of rotating between school and BPMI during these rotations. A typical schedule may be the first rotation occurring during the fall or spring of a student’s junior year, a required second rotation the following summer, and then an optional third rotation occurring during the fall or spring of the following school year. A co-op typically adds one semester to a student’s college program, but students typically earn college credits for their co-op participation (in addition to the BPMI compensation identified above); we encourage you to meet with your college advisor to determine the guidelines for your school.

As a prime contractor for the U.S. Navy, BPMI offers a truly unique and memorable internship and co-op experience for students. Understanding the work we do, the value we add to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, and our dedication to safety, security, and quality will help set the stage for understanding how your contributions will support our country's national security and maritime dominance.
